Thumbtack's Growth Story

In 2008, despite the advances of the internet, hiring a service provider was still really difficult. As Jonathan Swanson griped about his experience hiring a plumber, he realized he was on to something.

With his 3 co-founders, including CEO Marco Zappacosta, Jonathan officially launched Thumbtack in 2009. The company’s goal was to make hiring a pro as easy as buying a book online. People were always going to need local services and the two founders saw an opportunity to help two unique sets of people: customers with to-do lists and professionals who need to grow their businesses.

The company began to pick up steam, but monetization was a challenge. They tried a half dozen payment models—most notably commission and subscriptions—before settling on pay-per-introduction in 2013. With it, Thumbtack could grow revenue in lockstep with the value they create. It worked, and the company started growing fast.

Today, Thumbtack is still growing. 200,000 pros are helping customers with more than 5 million projects every year. More than 1,000 services are offered, from house cleaners to sky diving instructors. Plus, there are more than 350 employees making Thumbtack better every day.
