I deeply admire people who risk everything on a conviction about how the world should be.
There's a bodega in New York City named after my dad — he opened it shortly after immigrating to the US from South Korea. Decades later, I moved to the same city, and would see it every day on my commute. It's hard to see that and not understand what it costs to make something of yourself, and how few people are willing to pay it. What I look for is people willing to pay it for something worth the cost — not just hard problems, but good ones.
The founders I partner with usually have an inability to leave things alone — the reflex to look at an accepted process and immediately start pulling at how to undo it and rebuild it better. That instinct is what produces genuinely new companies rather than incrementally better ones. Nearly every accepted process today was designed for a world with a different set of constraints, which makes this an unusually good moment to be the kind of person who can't leave them alone.
The category matters far less to me than the people and the story they tell about why it has to exist. What I enjoy most is being close to the work — early, unglamorous, before anything is figured out. Sitting with someone who has an idea and no company yet, just to think it through. Helping someone find the place where they will do the best work of their life. Building the kind of community where founders solving the same problem can find each other.
